The Map of Time

#5th sized book project

5th sized book project

Residency at Newcastle City Library

The concept evolved into stitching into dust collected from books.

The studio was given access to the archived 5th sized book collection held at Newcastle Library and we became interested in representing time.

Hidden away for so long, time had physically accumulated on the books and we looked at the rare art books from previous centuries, untouched and unseen for many decades.

…a book titled ‘L’Art et la Vie en Belgique 1830-1905’ became my focus.

Taking the studio’s bespoke Belgian linen, we wiped the fabric on the surface of the book and using fine, time consuming stitch, we worked into the marks left by the dust

By using this tecnnique we began creating a map of time, which became sculptural. This work was later accompanied by a sound piece, generated through manipulation of the recorded noise of the first stitches being pulled through taught fabric and dust. This soundscape is available to listen to on our SONICS page, and downloadable for further collaboration on the Studio’s Soundcloud site.

X-ray.jpg

Residency for The Bowes Centre, a adjacent creative space to the museum to act as an active workshop to support gallery exhibitions.

Exhibited at The Bowes Museum, United Kingdom as part of the #Untitled10 project.

An experiment in layers and lines.

This work was inspired by a lace blouse displayed in the Textiles Gallery of The Bowes Museum.

The work is so fine that the light created the appearance of an x-ray. We became interested in recreating the delicacy whilst retaining the strength of a garment that would be worn.

With a brief that required only supporting work to be shown, with no finished piece to exhibit, we used the opportunity to experiment with the integrity of stitch.

Working intensively into dis-solvable fabric with hand stitch, we were able to investigate sculptural ideas, the stitching eventually holding itself together resulting in tiny, dense fragments of fabric.
