BEHIND THE ARTIST AND THE ARTISTRY
Lisa Smith is the founder of WEFT STUDIOS, an artist and designer, based in the North of England. Established in 2016, the studio was created as an umbrella identity for a myriad of art, installations, exhibitions, workshops, art collective collaborations and performances. In 2017 the studio was extended to include an atelier facility for private patron commissions, under the invitation of global artisanal representation agency, Glancy Fawcett.
An alumni of Manchester Met, with a world renown Fine Arts department, Lisa has been constantly engaged in developing skills and pursuing the ideas of sonics, space, sculpture and stitch as a combined art medium.
“Increasingly I see embroidery in terms of sculpture.
The more intense and fine the stitching I create…the happier I am.
The intensity of ideas are building a three dimensional organic self”
Finding a balance is pivotal, between the restraint and the expressive. Exploring the unstable boundaries between the spaces informs all her works. Gallery happenings, residencies and teaching workshops allows her to investigate the wilder shores of artistry.
“Art residencies allow me the space to think and experiment providing a conceptual backdrop to my work. Happily, alongside this through the development of WEFT DESIGN STUDIOS + ATELIER, I am also able to fulfill concepts: creating beautiful artifacts for private patrons that truly appreciates them”.
